Article - The Insidious Invasion That Is Destroying Your Workplace (And You…)

We have an epidemic on our hands.

There is an insidious invasion rippling throughout workplaces around the world.

Imagine a world where Zombies are walking into workplaces; individuals stripped of who they really are. Stripped of their creativity, their passion and their skills. Stripped of their confidence and self-worth. Day in – day out showing up with their eyes closed, devoid of any sense of purpose.

Hiding. Censoring. Pretending to be someone else. Trying to live up to other people’s expectations. Defending or protecting their reputation. Emulating the behaviour and actions of others. Mimicking what they see as successful from those around them. Comparing themselves to others. Experiencing conflict with colleagues. Not saying what they mean. Not fully completing on everything they say they will do. Motivation to do simple tasks is low. Making bad choices (at work and at home). Editing themselves. Criticising. Judging. Complaining.

Millions of individuals all around the world struggling with their identity and unable to express their real and true self to their colleagues.

Feeling shame. Overcompensating. Seeking approval and people to validate everything they do.

Experiencing anxiety, fears and mental health issues. Taking time off with ill physical health and mental health.

Emotions running high.

Masking vulnerability. Not asking for help. Struggling through.

Pretending to be someone and something they are not.

Those Zombies. Look around you. That is what is happening throughout organisations around the world, at every level of the organisation.

Individuals showing up to work wearing a mask to hide their real self.

It has to stop!

If you know you could be more authentic and real at work. If you want to re-connect to the real you AND you want to do something about it, you need to read this.

I see the impact this is having on individuals. On their relationships, their self-worth, their health, their mindset, family life, social life, finances, contribution to society and their community, personal growth. And… there is an overwhelming feeling of being isolated and lonely, cut off with no connection.

All this from trying to fit in. Aiming to be accepted. To not be outed at work. To hide the thoughts you keep having about not being good enough or being an imposter in your role.
