The Debilitating Nature Of Work Related Stress

Picture this…

Hurtling down the runway at 148mph, adrenaline pumping and exhilaration levels at their peak, the lure of new experiences pull at you.

Your mind cluttered with thoughts; thoughts of ‘what you left behind’, ‘what if’ and ‘what awaits.’

Swimming around in all directions, darting from one thought to the next in a split second, your mind buzzing busier than a bee hive.

You struggle to quieten it.

The excitement builds so much you think you might explode before the pull of the wheels off the ground.

You wish you could experience that feeling forever.

You know the one… When the wheels leave the ground and pull you up high into the sky floating around above the fluffiness of the clouds.

There is something quite magical about those few minutes where you hurtle forward from a stand still and lift off the ground effortlessly.

  • Moments after experiencing this magical pull of energy I realised this is how I used to live my life.

Hurtling forward at break neck speed, cramming as much as I could into each day.

My thoughts whirling around and around, littered with patterns such as ‘what if’, ‘what will X think about me’ and ‘I wish Y would happen.’

My adrenaline pumping from the very moment I awoke until the time I rest my head on the pillow at night with stress my predominant state of being.

My health suffering as a result.

The turning point?

  • The realisation that I had spent more time in the bathroom than at my desk on that bright summers morning.

It dawned on me that this wasn’t a one off.

It was something that I had been living for many months.

Work related stress had a hold of my body, mind, spirit and emotions and was determined to keep a tight hold.

Unless, I chose to do something different.

What would you have done in my situation?
