How To Stay Present In Conversations: Mindfulness

  • By Gina Battye

SUMMARY:

Have you ever been in the situation where your mind wanders off in conversation?

Or maybe you are on the other side of it!

Have you ever been in a conversation with someone where you can see they are drifting off, their eyes glazing or they are looking everywhere but in your direction?

Ever wondered why this happens?

It’s all about connection.

How to stay present and practise mindfulness in conversations:

  • Turn down all the distractions. Tune out from the background noise.
  • Focus all your attention – your eyes, your ears, your energy and your intention on the person you are with. Listen to every word they say, tune into their energy and emotion and hear the unspoken word.
  • Get fully absorbed in your interaction with the person you are with. Ask them questions, reframe back what you heard to make sure you are following the conversation and be in the conversation to serve them, to help them.
  • When you go into the conversation with you in mind, you will be thinking of what you are going to respond with next instead of being guided by the needs of the person. Be in it for them.

When you are fully present in the moment, you are practising mindfulness and you emotionally connect.

And when you emotionally connect with people, you re-connect to your authentic self AND live a calm and peaceful life.
