I’m Deliberate And Afraid Of Nothing
My journey as a transgender person started when I was four.
I remember taking a bath with my youngest sister and asking my mom why I had to cover my area and what was this awful mistake between my legs.
I started dressing up when my sisters weren’t around and using their makeup in the bathroom or in the basement where we had an assortment of wigs in a department store box.
I always felt different from others but I knew that if I kept this secret, I reduced my chances of serious bodily injury so I try to overcompensate with weight training and sports.
The impact it has had on my life has been dramatic. I went from having a connection to my other siblings and my mom to only having two who accept me.
The biggest challenge is at work where I used to be the top employee with my performance to a transwoman who is on a performance plan due to working in a transphobic, hostile work environment where ciswomen lie about me regularly because they are not comfortable with me being authentic.
What I Learnt
- Build a strong support system in case family, friends or work are abandoning you.
- It’s better to being true to yourself sooner than later.
- Don’t compare yourself to others and belittle any of your accomplishments. You are valuable and appreciated.
