Comfort Or Stretch?

It’s easy to go through life just drifting along, going through the motions. Passing through your days with little thought about what you’re saying or doing or where you are heading.

Maybe you have something you have been wanting to do for a while: whether it is a new hobby, a change in direction in your career or to make tweaks to your lifestyle for the health of your family.

What is Getting In Your Way?

So what is stopping you from doing these things? Now I am talking about the real barriers here, not the ones that you use as a get out clause…

I used to have a whole array of get out clauses and real barriers that stopped me from living the life I wanted.

Let me take you back. I used to be a teacher in a college. I was drifting along. One hot day over the summer holidays, whilst my friends were out enjoying the sunshine and reliving the entire experience to me through text messages, I had an epiphany.

I realised my life wasn’t what I wanted it to be. And I knew I had the power within me to change it.

I took some time out during those long summer days, whilst it was quiet at work, to think about what I wanted. What I really wanted. It became clear that the only thing holding me back from the life I wanted was me.

Do you hold yourself back from doing all those things you would love to do?

I knew I would need to push outside my comfort zone if I was to do all the things I wanted to do. I knew my comfort zone had held me back and firmly in the reality I was in for so long. Only by pushing outside it could I really start to live the life I had envisioned.

What Do You Want?

  • Have you paused at any point to think about what it is you want?
  • Do you know what makes your heart and soul sing?
  • Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? And how does that differ from your current reality?
  • Identify where in your life you feel in your comfort zone and where you stretch yourself.

Once you have the awareness from these questions, you can start to plan for your future.

Stretch Yourself

Make it your mission to stretch yourself every day. This is where the magic happens. You will see and experience the opportunities all around you. The opportunities that you have been missing by staying in your comfort zone.

My vision was to speak internationally. Back when I was a teacher, this seemed impossible. When I communicated my vision to my friends and colleagues I was often laughed at and told to dream smaller, to dream more realistically.

I write this article as I sit by the lake on a business trip, with the heat of the sun on my skin in Lake Tahoe, California. I overcame my fears and realised my vision by pushing outside my comfort zone every day. I made it my mission to do something every day to take me one step closer to my vision and to stretch myself.

What are you going to do today to take you one step closer to your vision and to stretch yourself?
